Patios

Patio Design and Installation for Northern Virginia Properties

A patio is only as good as what is underneath it. Surface materials get the attention, but base preparation and drainage determine whether your patio stays level and intact over time. Northern Virginia's clay soils and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on poorly built hardscapes.

Battlefield Decks & Patios designs and builds patios throughout Northern Virginia. We are a Class A licensed contractor with over 21 years in the construction industry. We handle design, site preparation, drainage, and installation.

  • Natural stone, pavers, and concrete patios
  • Drainage solutions and proper base preparation
  • Integration with pools, outdoor kitchens, and landscape features

Our Patio Services

Here is what we provide for patio projects.

Site Evaluation

We assess your property for drainage patterns, soil conditions, grade changes, and access. These factors affect design options, base requirements, and cost.

Design

We develop patio layouts based on how you intend to use the space, your home's architecture, and site conditions. This includes shape, size, material selection, and integration with surrounding elements.

Base Preparation

We excavate to the proper depth, address drainage, and install compacted aggregate base materials. This work is not visible when finished, but it determines long-term performance.

Installation

Our crews install your selected surface material with proper techniques for that material type. This includes edge restraints, joint sand or mortar, and sealing where appropriate.

Drainage Integration

We incorporate drainage solutions as needed, grading, channel drains, french drains, or dry wells. Water management is addressed during construction, not as an afterthought.

Patio Materials

Different materials have different characteristics. Here are the main options we install.

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured units in various colors, shapes, and textures. Consistent dimensions make installation efficient. Wide range of price points. Individual units can be replaced if damaged. Some styles mimic natural stone appearance.

Natural Stone

Bluestone, flagstone, travertine, limestone, and other quarried materials. Each piece is unique. Higher material cost than pavers. Requires skilled installation. Offers an appearance that manufactured products cannot replicate.

Poured Concrete

Solid concrete slabs with various finish options, broom finish, stamped patterns, exposed aggregate, or stained. Lower material cost than pavers or stone. Prone to cracking over time, especially in our climate. Cracks cannot be repaired invisibly.

Permeable Options

Pavers with wider joints or porous materials that allow water infiltration. Reduces runoff and may help meet stormwater requirements. Requires specific base preparation. Higher installation cost than standard pavers.

Combination Designs

Many patios combine materials, paver field with stone borders, concrete with paver accents, or different paver styles in distinct zones. Combinations add visual interest and cost.

Which Material Fits Your Project?

Our Process

Here is how we handle patio projects.

Phase 1: Consultation

We visit your property to discuss what you want and evaluate site conditions. We identify any drainage issues, access limitations, or other factors that affect the project. This consultation is free.

Phase 2: Design and Proposal

We develop a design and provide a detailed proposal with specifications, material selections, and pricing. We explain what is included and what is not.

Phase 3: Permitting

Some patio projects require permits depending on size, location, and scope. We determine requirements and handle applications when needed.

Phase 4: Preparation

We excavate the area, establish proper grades for drainage, and install compacted base materials. This phase takes longer than most people expect but is critical.

Phase 5: Installation

We install the surface material, edge restraints, and joint material. For mortared installations, we complete pointing and curing.

Phase 6: Completion

We clean the finished surface, address any final grading, and walk through the project with you. We provide care and maintenance guidance for your specific materials.

Why Work With Battlefield Decks & Patios

Licensed and Experienced

Class A contractor license in Virginia. Over 21 years in construction. We have built patios in most soil and site conditions found in Northern Virginia.

Proper Base Work

We do not shortcut excavation or base preparation. These steps determine whether your patio stays flat or develops settling and drainage problems.

Drainage Focus

Water problems are addressed during design and construction. We see too many patios that direct water toward foundations or create ponding because drainage was not properly planned.

Material Knowledge

We work with various patio materials and understand their installation requirements, maintenance needs, and how they perform over time in our climate.

Integrated Projects

If your project includes a pool, outdoor kitchen, fire feature, or other elements, we handle it as one coordinated project rather than separate contractors working around each other.
