Our Deck Services
Here is what we provide for deck projects.
Site Evaluation
We assess your property for grade changes, soil conditions, existing structures, and access. These factors affect design options, structural requirements, and cost.
Design
We develop deck layouts based on how you intend to use the space, your home's architecture, and site conditions. This includes size, shape, levels, railings, stairs, and built-in features.
Structural Engineering
Complex decks, elevated, multi-level, or large spans require proper engineering. We design framing systems, specify footings, and ensure ledger connections meet code requirements.
Permitting
Decks require building permits in Northern Virginia. We prepare applications, provide required drawings and specifications, and coordinate inspections throughout construction.
Construction
Our crews handle footings, framing, decking, railings, stairs, and finishing details. We build to code requirements and manufacturer specifications for the materials used.
Deck Materials
Material selection affects appearance, maintenance, lifespan, and cost. Here are the main options we install.
Composite Decking
Manufactured boards are made from wood fiber and plastic. Low maintenance, no staining or sealing required. Resists rot and insects. Higher material cost than pressure-treated wood. Various colors and textures are available. Quality varies significantly by brand and product line.
PVC Decking
Fully synthetic boards with no wood content. Highest resistance to moisture, staining, and fading. Highest material cost. Some people find the appearance less natural than composite or wood.
Pressure-Treated Wood
Lumber treated with preservatives to resist rot and insects. Lowest material cost. Requires periodic staining or sealing. Will crack, warp, and gray over time without maintenance. Still a reasonable choice if you are willing to maintain it.
Hardwood
Ipe, cumaru, tigerwood, and other dense tropical hardwoods. Natural appearance with exceptional durability. Highest material cost. Requires specialized fastening and periodic oiling to maintain appearance. Heavy and difficult to work with.
Cedar and Redwood
Naturally rot-resistant softwoods. Attractive appearance. Moderate cost. Requires maintenance similar to pressure-treated wood. Softer than hardwoods, so more prone to dents and wear.
Which Material Fits Your Project?
Our Process
Here is how we handle deck projects.
Phase 1: Consultation
We visit your property to discuss what you want and evaluate site conditions. We identify structural considerations, access issues, and any factors that affect design or cost. This consultation is free.
Phase 2: Design and Proposal
We develop a design and provide a detailed proposal with specifications, material selections, and pricing. Complex projects may include drawings showing layout and structural details.
Phase 3: Permitting
We submit permit applications to your local building department. We provide the required documentation and respond to any reviewer comments.
Phase 4: Footings and Framing
We install footings to the proper depth and construct the structural frame. This work is inspected before the decking is installed.
Phase 5: Decking and Railings
We install deck boards, railings, stairs, and trim. Fastening methods follow manufacturer's requirements for the materials used.
Phase 6: Completion
We complete final details, coordinate final inspection, and walk through the project with you. We provide care and maintenance guidance for your specific materials.

These guys are the best! Listen, anybody can put some screws into a board, but I’m not sure I'd walk around it or trust it to hold up for years to come. These guys know what they are doing so your deck or patio lasts for years to come. They know all the local codes so you don’t get in trouble with the county. Plus, they are just a pleasure to work with. Don’t mess around with other guys just to save a buck. What these guys do lasts for years to come. Thanks as always Shane!
Battlefield installed a beautiful custom deck in record time. Everyone that worked on the deck was professional, fast, and I highly recommend them. Thank you, Battlefield Custom Decks and Patios!
Whitney was great to work with. He’s knowledgeable, easy to talk to, understood what I wanted and had great insight for my unique project. The crew worked so hard. Martin and his guys worked so hard to install exactly what was planned… they worked in the heat and the rain until it was done. It meant a lot to them that I was pleased with the finished product. They took great pride in their work and kept the work sight tidy.
I hired Battlefield Custom Decks and Patios to tear out and rebuild a custom Composite deck. Their craftsmanship is impeccable and they communicated with me through the entire process! I strongly suggest this company!
