Our Deck Services
Here is what we provide for deck projects.
Site Evaluation
We assess your property for grade changes, soil conditions, existing structures, and access. These factors affect design options, structural requirements, and cost.
Design
We develop deck layouts based on how you intend to use the space, your home's architecture, and site conditions. This includes size, shape, levels, railings, stairs, and built-in features.
Structural Engineering
Complex decks, elevated, multi-level, or large spans require proper engineering. We design framing systems, specify footings, and ensure ledger connections meet code requirements.
Permitting
Decks require building permits in Northern Virginia. We prepare applications, provide required drawings and specifications, and coordinate inspections throughout construction.
Construction
Our crews handle footings, framing, decking, railings, stairs, and finishing details. We build to code requirements and manufacturer specifications for the materials used.
Deck Materials
Material selection affects appearance, maintenance, lifespan, and cost. Here are the main options we install.
Composite Decking
Manufactured boards are made from wood fiber and plastic. Low maintenance, no staining or sealing required. Resists rot and insects. Higher material cost than pressure-treated wood. Various colors and textures are available. Quality varies significantly by brand and product line.
PVC Decking
Fully synthetic boards with no wood content. Highest resistance to moisture, staining, and fading. Highest material cost. Some people find the appearance less natural than composite or wood.
Pressure-Treated Wood
Lumber treated with preservatives to resist rot and insects. Lowest material cost. Requires periodic staining or sealing. Will crack, warp, and gray over time without maintenance. Still a reasonable choice if you are willing to maintain it.
Hardwood
Ipe, cumaru, tigerwood, and other dense tropical hardwoods. Natural appearance with exceptional durability. Highest material cost. Requires specialized fastening and periodic oiling to maintain appearance. Heavy and difficult to work with.
Cedar and Redwood
Naturally rot-resistant softwoods. Attractive appearance. Moderate cost. Requires maintenance similar to pressure-treated wood. Softer than hardwoods, so more prone to dents and wear.
Which Material Fits Your Project?
Our Process
Here is how we handle deck projects.
Phase 1: Consultation
We visit your property to discuss what you want and evaluate site conditions. We identify structural considerations, access issues, and any factors that affect design or cost.
Phase 2: Design and Proposal
We develop a design and provide a detailed proposal with specifications, material selections, and pricing. Complex projects may include drawings showing layout and structural details.
Phase 3: Permitting
We submit permit applications to your local building department. We provide the required documentation and respond to any reviewer comments.
Phase 4: Footings and Framing
We install footings to the proper depth and construct the structural frame. This work is inspected before the decking is installed.
Phase 5: Decking and Railings
We install deck boards, railings, stairs, and trim. Fastening methods follow manufacturer's requirements for the materials used.
Phase 6: Completion
We complete final details, coordinate final inspection, and walk through the project with you. We provide care and maintenance guidance for your specific materials.

What Our Clients Say
We had a great experience with the Battlefield team building a new deck and patio. Excellent work and communication from start to finish.
Battlefield custom Decks are top notch!! Absolutely a great experience from the salesman to the crew that did the installation. Everyone was very professional and delivered as promised right from the beginning. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to add a beautiful deck or patio to their home.
Battlefield was quick to respond to our inquiry. Whitney, our design consultant, came out even in the rain to take measurements and took the time to really go over our wants and need for a deck. The whole process was quick and easy to deal with other than the county just taking their sweet time to approve permits. Battlefield took care of all the paperwork and communicated to us on a regular basis. They were also very fast in the build and the quality of the deck was everything I wanted! Highly Recommend Battlefield!!
Battlefield Custom Decks and Patios constructed a new covered porch/deck and stone patio for me. From start (scope, design, proposal, contract) to finish (demolish old deck, permits, construct new porch and patio), the entire effort was very efficient. The owner Shane visited the site every day, was highly flexible, and answered all questions. He took care of a lot of little details that most companies would otherwise quibble over. The company took pride in their work. The overall quality of work is excellent, the materials used were of high quality. I have never been so impressed with any other construction project. I will highly recommend this company and will not hesitate to use them again.
We had a patio built by Battlefield Custom Decks and Patios and we were highly impressed by this company! We had 2 other bids and the estimate provided was in line with other companies, however due to rave reviews and a timeline that couldn't be beat (other companies said it would take several months before they could start - Battlefield got to work almost immediately) we went with Battlefield and are happy we did. The job was completed in a few days which was awesome, and I can tell the crew worked hard. We requested an extension to our original patio so it was hard to find a perfect match, especially with all sorts of delays and shipping issues currently happening, but I'd say it looks pretty close and we were assured over time it would look even more alike. We've got our hot tub coming next month and are sooo excited! Thanks to Battlefield we will be enjoying it soon
Bill and Shane are awesome. During the design and preconstruction phase we worked with Bill. He was always patient and worked with us through all our design changes and layouts to ensure we got exactly what we wanted. The colors we picked for our deck were on back order and were going to take several months to arrive. But when a company finally had some they called Bill first and they were able to get started on our deck right away. When building, we frequently saw and communicated with Shane. He ensured everything was done smoothly and that no issues would arise, frequently checking everything. They were a pleasure to work with, reasonably priced and built us a beautiful deck. We meet with multiple deck builders, but Bill was the best and sold us on Battlefield. If you are looking for a deck or patio, you wont be disappointed. Cant wait for them to do our patio next.
The deck is high quality, completed ahead of schedule, owners are very responsive to calls, texts. I would absolutely recommend them to any family member or friend!!
Exceptional experience! Bill's team of highly skilled installers did a "fine" job. We were very pleased with Bills attention to detail and his feedback on what would present well, he delivered on all fronts! I am happy to recommend Battlefield Custom Decks and Patios.
Having recently moved back to Virginia, I wanted to put a deck on my new home but had no referrals but one. I contacted one company which was slow to respond and didn’t listen to my requirements. Several families on my street were getting decks and I noted Battlefield’s signs in their front yards. From the minute I called and spoke to the team I was impressed. They were patient, responsive, and a true pleasure to work with. The deck is beautiful and I’m already thinking about a patio for next year! I cannot recommend them enough.
An excellent experience. I totally recommend them!! They were very friendly and professional and they did everything on time with amazing results.
