Our Covered Porch Services
Here is what we provide for covered porch projects.
Site and Structural Evaluation
We assess your home's construction, existing roofline, foundation, and attachment points. Not every home can easily accommodate a covered porch addition. We identify structural requirements and limitations upfront.
Design
We develop porch designs that complement your home's architecture. This includes roof style, pitch, column placement, ceiling treatment, and how the new structure ties into existing elements.
Structural Engineering
Covered porches carry roof loads and must be properly engineered. We design framing, specify footings, and detail connections to your existing structure to meet code requirements.
Permitting
Covered porch additions require building permits. We prepare applications with required drawings, structural details, and specifications. We coordinate inspections throughout construction.
Construction
Our crews handle foundation work, framing, roofing, trim, ceiling installation, and electrical. We manage the project from start to finish, including coordination with roofing and electrical trades.
Covered Porch Options
Different configurations serve different purposes. Here are the main types we build.
Attached Covered Porches
The roof structure connects to your home, typically extending from an existing roofline or attaching to the house wall. Requires proper ledger connection, flashing, and integration with existing drainage. Most common configuration.
Freestanding Covered Structures
Independent roof structure not attached to the house. Supported entirely by posts. Avoids complications of tying into the existing roof but requires more substantial footings and framing. Works well when attachment is impractical.
Gable Roof Porches
Peaked roof with two sloping sides. Provides more headroom and architectural interest. More complex framing than shed roofs. Works well on homes with existing gable rooflines.
Shed Roof Porches
Single sloping roof plane, typically sloping away from the house. Simpler framing and lower cost than gable designs. Common choice when attaching below existing rooflines.
Hip Roof Porches
Roof slopes on all sides. More complex framing. Provides a finished appearance from all angles. Often used on corner porches or freestanding structures.
Ceiling Options
Exposed rafters, tongue-and-groove wood, beadboard, or finished drywall. Each has different appearance, cost, and maintenance characteristics. Ceiling choice significantly affects the porch's character.
Which Style Fits Your Home?
Our Process
Here is how we handle covered porch projects.
Phase 1: Consultation
We visit your property to discuss what you want and evaluate your home's construction. We identify how a covered porch would connect to existing structures and note any factors that affect design or cost. This consultation is free.
Phase 2: Design and Proposal
We develop a design and provide a detailed proposal with specifications and pricing. This includes roof style, materials, ceiling treatment, electrical, and any structural requirements.
Phase 3: Permitting
We submit permit applications with required drawings and structural details. Covered structures typically require more extensive permit documentation than open decks.
Phase 4: Foundation and Framing
We install footings and construct the structural frame, including posts, beams, and roof framing. This work is inspected before proceeding.
Phase 5: Roofing and Exterior
We install roof sheathing, underlayment, and roofing material. Flashing and connections to the existing roof are completed. Gutters are installed if specified.
Phase 6: Ceiling and Electrical
We install ceiling material, electrical wiring, outlets, lighting, and ceiling fans. Electrical work is inspected before covering.
Phase 7: Finishing
We complete trim, paint, or stain, and final details. We coordinate the final inspection and walk through the project with you.
Why Work With Battlefield Decks & Patios
Licensed and Experienced
Class A contractor license in Virginia. Over 21 years in construction. We have built covered porches on various home styles and dealt with the structural complications they involve.
Roof Integration Expertise
Connecting a new roof to an existing structure requires proper technique. Poor flashing, inadequate framing, or improper drainage causes leaks and damage. We have the experience to get these details right.
Architectural Sensitivity
A covered porch should look like it belongs on your home. We design roof pitches, column styles, and trim details that complement your home's existing architecture rather than looking like an afterthought.
Full Scope Capability
We handle structural work, roofing, electrical, and finishing. One contractor managing all aspects prevents coordination problems between separate trades.
Code Compliance
Covered structures have more complex code requirements than open decks. We design and build to current requirements and ensure your project passes inspections.

These guys are the best! Listen, anybody can put some screws into a board, but I’m not sure I'd walk around it or trust it to hold up for years to come. These guys know what they are doing so your deck or patio lasts for years to come. They know all the local codes so you don’t get in trouble with the county. Plus, they are just a pleasure to work with. Don’t mess around with other guys just to save a buck. What these guys do lasts for years to come. Thanks as always Shane!
Battlefield installed a beautiful custom deck in record time. Everyone that worked on the deck was professional, fast, and I highly recommend them. Thank you, Battlefield Custom Decks and Patios!
Whitney was great to work with. He’s knowledgeable, easy to talk to, understood what I wanted and had great insight for my unique project. The crew worked so hard. Martin and his guys worked so hard to install exactly what was planned… they worked in the heat and the rain until it was done. It meant a lot to them that I was pleased with the finished product. They took great pride in their work and kept the work sight tidy.
I hired Battlefield Custom Decks and Patios to tear out and rebuild a custom Composite deck. Their craftsmanship is impeccable and they communicated with me through the entire process! I strongly suggest this company!
I hired Battlefield Custom Decks to build a deck for my fiance's house. Shane was courteous and very knowledgeable about the project and came in on time and on budget. He came highly recommended and lived up to it.
