Our Permeable Paver Services
Here is what we provide for permeable paver projects.
Site Evaluation
We assess your property for soil conditions, drainage patterns, slopes, and infiltration capacity. Permeable systems work better in some conditions than others. We determine whether permeable pavers make sense for your specific site.
System Design
Permeable installations require engineered base systems, not just surface material. We design the full system pavers, joint material, aggregate base layers, and any supplemental drainage based on your site conditions and intended use.
Base Preparation
The aggregate base is where water is stored and infiltrates into the soil. We excavate to proper depth and install specified aggregate layers with appropriate compaction. This work determines system performance.
Installation
We install pavers with proper joint spacing and fill joints with specified aggregate material. Edge restraints and transitions to other surfaces are completed to maintain system integrity.
Inspection and Documentation
Some jurisdictions require inspection of permeable installations for stormwater credit. We coordinate required inspections and provide documentation as needed.
Permeable Paver Applications
Permeable systems work well in some applications and less well in others. Here are the main uses.
Driveways
Permeable driveways reduce runoff from one of the largest impervious surfaces on most residential properties. They handle vehicle traffic when properly designed and installed. Higher cost than standard paver or concrete driveways.
Patios
Permeable patios allow rainfall to infiltrate on-site rather than flowing toward your foundation or creating puddles. Useful where drainage is problematic or where reducing impervious coverage matters.
Pool Decks
Permeable pavers around pools drain splash-out and rainwater rather than creating standing water. Can improve safety and comfort compared to surfaces that stay wet.
Walkways and Paths
Lower traffic areas where infiltration is beneficial. Often used to connect other permeable areas or to manage water in specific zones.
Parking Areas
Residential parking pads or motor courts where reducing impervious surface is desired. Must be designed for vehicle loads.
Where Permeable May Not Work
High clay content soils with very low infiltration rates limit effectiveness. Steep slopes complicate installation. Areas with high water tables or contamination concerns may be inappropriate. Heavy sediment loads can clog the system. We evaluate these factors during site assessment.
Is Permeable Right for Your Property?
Our Process
Here is how we handle permeable paver projects.
Phase 1: Consultation
We visit your property to discuss your goals and evaluate site conditions. We assess soil type, drainage patterns, slopes, and existing infrastructure. This consultation is free.
Phase 2: Design and Proposal
We design the permeable system and provide a detailed proposal with specifications and pricing. This includes base depth and materials, paver selection, and any supplemental drainage components.
Phase 3: Permitting
Some permeable installations require permits or provide stormwater credits that require documentation. We determine requirements and handle applications as needed.
Phase 4: Excavation and Base
We excavate to required depth and install aggregate base layers. This is the most labor-intensive phase and takes longer than standard paver base preparation.
Phase 5: Paver Installation
We install pavers with proper joint spacing, fill joints with specified aggregate, and install edge restraints. Transitions to other surfaces are completed.
Phase 6: Completion
We clean the surface, verify drainage function, and walk through the project with you. We provide maintenance guidance to keep the system functioning properly.
Why Work With Battlefield Decks & Patios
Licensed and Experienced
Class A contractor license in Virginia. Over 21 years in construction. We understand permeable system requirements and have installed them in various soil and site conditions.
System Knowledge
Permeable pavers are not just regular pavers with wider joints. The entire system, base depth, aggregate specification, and joint material must be designed correctly. We understand how these systems work and how to build them properly.
Honest Assessment
Permeable pavers cost more than standard installations and do not work well in all conditions. We tell you if permeable is appropriate for your site or if a different approach makes more sense.
Proper Installation
Permeable systems fail when base preparation is inadequate or the joint material is incorrect. We follow manufacturer and industry specifications for installation.
Integrated Projects
If your project includes patios, pools, or other elements, we coordinate permeable areas with the overall design rather than treating them as separate installations.
What Our Clients Say
Battlefield Custom Decks & Patios built our dream covered porch (with tree decking, gas fireplace & glass railings) and did a phenomenal job! Our project manager, Adam, kept us up to date on everything and was incredibly responsive whenever I had a question. They worked WITH us every step of the way. We’re thrilled that we decided to go with them and don’t have a single regret. They were the utmost professionals the entire way through. 100% recommend!
I had a stamped concrete patio built and stairs added onto my existing deck. The professionalism and timeliness with which they completed the project was impressive. I contracted Battlefield Custom Deck and Patio to build a deck. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. The deck is beautiful, very well built, solid, excellent quality materials, meticulous attention to detail and they were fast. They were ready to roll as soon as the county approved my permit. Bill, Shane and all the employees are very professional and very knowledgeable. They were always willing to answer my questions, walked me thru the process and addressed my concerns or questions expeditiously. I highly recommend this company.
We contracted Battlefield Custom Decks and Patio to help us extend our existing patio. We wanted something that would finish off the steps and allow us to have more of a seating area. Bill searched high and low to find the right match to our existing paver. We found a very close match , but decided on a different boarder color. We are so glad that we went for it! The team completed the project in one day arriving by 7am and finishing by 5:30pm. We can't wait for the warmer weather!
I highly recommend using Battlefield Custom Decks for any deck project. Starting with Whitney and his design assistance and guidance on options, to Shane and his very hard working construction team, we were very pleased with our deck refurbishment project. The on-site team worked very hard in tough weather conditions to get it completed in our target timeframe. Their work was top notch and very responsive to any requests along the way. You can’t go wrong with them … and at a very reasonable price.
Battlefield Custom Decks gave us a great price for a beautifully designed composite deck and pergola. We love it, use it every day. From beginning to end, tear down, construction and clean up was done by a smart, professional and friendly group of workers. Every process was explained and built exactly the way we wanted. The GC was very prompt and always followed up with my wife and I about progress. Minor changes were made as we saw need for additional items, these changes were added and the contractor still came in on time. The look and use of our yard is light years from were we began. We are so happy to have found GC that gave us everything we asked for a more. Plus the neighbors love the look and talk about the craftsmanship.
It was such a pleasure working with Bill, Shane, and their highly experienced and professional crew. We were extremely happy with the quality of their work and recommend them highly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Permeable installations typically cost 20-30% more than standard paver installations due to deeper excavation and more aggregate material. Expect $30-$50 per square foot for patios and walkways, $40-$60+ per square foot for driveways. We provide specific pricing after evaluating your project.
